by on Jul.10, 2007, under Motorcycles

I believe I blogged about this a while back. Now, however, it is a reality that they will be producing the bike for the US market.

Harley-Davidson has just announced that the XR1200 sports bike is to be made a full production bike.

Dyna Mini Ape Handle Bar Recall.

by on Mar.17, 2007, under Motorcycles

Harley Davidson Motor Company is in the midst of a LARGE recall of ALL 2006 & 2007′ (07′s produced up until November of 2006) FXDWG (Dyna Wide Glide?) OEM 1 1/4″ handlebars (a.k.a. the “mini apes” – approximately 10″ high & 50 state legal).

This recall was announced at the end of last year (However, not a lot of press was seen mind you)

It seems the the tubing wall was not thick enough and since these bars are drilled for the internal wiring, some have been compromised. apparently causing lethal situations. They cracked “big time” from the hole at the base of the bars, between the underside the clamps.

The OEM part number is 59782-06
The new updated version have the part number 59782-06A.

Once I can find a link to this info on the net I will update it here.

Night Riding……….

by on Mar.15, 2007, under Motorcycles

Thanks to my friend Chuck for this info.

Night riding significantly increases the risk of fatality. A 2006 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study found the following information.

60% of all motorcycle fatalities occur at night!!

This might not seem overwhelming, but consider these facts:

1) During warm weather months, it’s daylight for more than half of the day.

2) More people ride during daylight hours.

It’s impossible to know the exact breakdown of total miles ridden at night verses miles ridden during the day. But, one might conservatively estimate that over 80% of the total motorcycle miles ridden during each year occur during daylight.

Think about it!

Approximately 60% of the fatalities occur during 20% of the total miles ridden.

This is significant!

What can we do to reduce our risks??

1) Don’t ride at night.
2) Recognize the increased risk if we must ride.
3) Plan rides so that they complete before dark.
4) Ride defensively 9leaving extra safety margins) and continue to assume that you are invisible to others.
5) Wear riding gear with reflective material.
